Funny how location effects the how one's saying go. For me, it's "red sky in the morning, sailors take warning". Someone with family roots in Nova Scotia here.
I first heard the "shepherd" version; but a number of others who commented on Facebook seemed to be pointing out the "sailor" variation. My family are English so perhaps there are two versions even within England, I think that is where the saying originates.
